UAB’s GCRC nursing staff is made up of experienced and dedicated nurses who are specifically trained to help Principal Investigators and other study personnel during the initiation and implementation of GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee approved research protocols. Our nursing practice is guided by scientific knowledge, standards of care and a code of ethics.

We facilitate new studies by working closely with the research nurse coordinators to meet the specific needs of each protocol. We also facilitate GCRC staff education by coordinating in-services and ensuring staff have the knowledge needed to effectively carry out a research protocol.

The GCRC inpatient unit is available full-time (7 days/week, 24 hours/day) and the outpatient clinics are available from 7:30 AM until 5 PM, Monday through Friday. The outpatient clinics are located on the 9th floor of the Medical Education Building (MEB 990) and on the 4th floor of The Kirklin Clinic (TKC). The outpatient clinic on the 9th floor of the GCRC provides a variety of services to investigators including but not limited to urine pregnancy tests, venipuncture, PK/PD sampling and IV infusions.

The GCRC also conducts off-site visits for investigators. We have one nurse dedicated to providing support for off-site visits. The GCRC also retains a pediatric nurse for assistance in conducting pediatric studies either in our GCRC facilities or within scatterbeds or clinics at the The Children’s Hospital of Alabama as well as cross-trained staff who are available to see pediatric research participants.
