Molecular Genetics Lab
The GCRC Molecular Genetics Core can assist GCRC SAC approved studies with the preparation of patient specimens for genetic studies and with specimen banking. We are available to work with the GCRC patient facilities to facilitate “bedside-to-bench” research. Specific services currently available include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Preparation of mononuclear cells (MNC)
- Preparation of EBV-immortalized lymphoblastoid cell lines
- Cryopreservation of cell lines and fresh MNC
- Preparation of buffy coats from blood for DNA extractions
- DNA extractions from blood, buffy coats, buccal swabs and cell lines using the Gentra PureGene system
- Banking of DNA and buffy coats in fully inventoried -80oC freezers
- Banking of cells/cell lines in fully inventoried cryogenic (LN2) freezers
- Assistance in the preparation of DNA for genotyping
- Access to SNP genotyping technology together with the Heflin Genomics Core
- Consultation in study design and genotyping approaches
- DNA prepared with this system is archival quality
- DNA prepared in this manner is suitable for genotyping on most platforms including high throughput technologies offered by Illumina and Affymetrix
- Pyrosequencing
- TaqMan allelic discrimination assays

include:
- $45.00 for initiation of an EBV line
- $6.00 for DNA Extractions (cell lines, buffy coats)(50-200ug scale)
- $1.00 for blood/buccal DNA Extractions (5-20ug scale)
- $7.00 for expanding a frozen cell line (for up to 2 weeks of work)
- $5.00 for mononuclear cell preparation
- $0.75 per aliquot for cell cryopreservation (MNC)
- Genotyping fees – Contact the Heflin Genomics Core

With the impending transition of the GCRC to the CTSA, further changes in the core billing may become necessary. We will strive to keep our costs as low as possible.
The Core is located in Shelby 230. For more information about our cell line or DNA
