Training - GCRC Bionutrition

The Clinical Nutrition Research Traineeship (funded by cookbook income account fund) for nutrition graduate students that Ms. Darnell planned and implemented in 1993 has been very successful and has been recognized by NIH site visitors as Outstanding. In addition to receiving graduate credit during the traineeship, the students are required to work with a GCRC investigator to complete research and write a thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Science degree in Nutrition Science. Students may elect to stay to complete requirements for a PhD in Nutrition Research. Twenty-three students have completed the MS program and two have completed the PhD program through the GCRC.

Doctoral Fellowships*
The GCRC currently has two Nutrition Research Doctoral Students funded through non-grant mechanisms. These individuals are doctoral students with an interest in nutrition and research. Their contribution to the GCRC includes research menu design, menu analysis using the latest computer software, protocol evaluation, and patient care. While assisting ongoing GCRC investigators, these students are also responsible for developing their own protocols, applying for grant funding, and recruiting patients for their own GCRC studies.

Masters Traineeships*
The Bionutrition Department provides training for graduate students pursuing a Master’s of Science in Clinical Nutrition. Pittman GCRC currently has two graduate trainees yearly. The trainees work for the GCRC for a one-year period and are available to assist investigators with menu development, data collection and analysis of patients’ food intake using NDS-R. Trainees write their Master’s thesis over the course of their appointment.

Dietetic Internship
The Bionutrition department provides training to UAB dietetic interns. Interns spend one week in the department and have the opportunity to design and prepare a metabolic balance diet, perform nutrient analysis using NDS-R, gain experience with anthropometrics, record and chart in the research setting, assist in patient care, and learn about active protocols.
